Case Study - Expert Profiles: CDR Engineers

Brennan Clark

Brennan Clark joined Donan in 2014, first as an Engineer in Training, then as a Professional Engineer. Today, he spearheads Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) solutions. Here, he lays out what attracted him to engineering, Donan, and how important finding the truth is to the people on the other end of a vehicle crash claim. Check out donan.com for more details about our growing CDR offerings!

What drew you to Donan over other engineering firms?

I’m drawn to the fact that we lead with integrity and that “respect and care for all” is a written part of our values. I’ve always been curious and had a propensity for problem solving, but all of our projects are also attached to human beings. For some losses, that just involves an inconvenience, but auto accidents can involve serious bodily harm or fatalities, which have lasting impacts on the individuals involved and their families. It’s important to honor each case as though it were a member of my own family.

What are your biggest accomplishments as part of the Donan team?

My two biggest accomplishments are getting my Professional Engineer license and reimagining and revitalizing the crash data retrieval service. Donan gave me the opportunity to seek any training I needed to fully realize my Professional Engineering license. Then in the last three years, I was given resources to complete the training needed to establish the CDR program. We have offered this service in the past, but now we have the resources to make it more robust and serve a larger client base.

Who are your inspirations?

My dad. He was 1 of 7 kids in a working-class family in Bardstown, KY, who delivered papers and did odd jobs to pay his own way through high school and college. He taught me the importance of hard work and not taking what you have for granted.

Also, an elementary school teacher, Mr. Walsh-Kelly, taught me the motto “The choices you make determine the choices you have,” which shaped my mindset growing up.

Are there things you see on the horizon in the industry that you’re excited about?

As crash data technology is constantly improving, more and more information and data are becoming available every year. Recently some auto makers have started to capture images from the camera modules in vehicles as part of the available crash data. As this technology becomes more mainstream and works its way into the marketplace, it’s going to be an amazing tool for accident reconstruction.

Learn about his proudest achievements and how he believes burgeoning technology will evolve the industry.

What do you think sets Donan apart?

Donan’s value of leading with integrity connects with me because it’s about letting the truth guide decision-making. All the work we do traces back to objective data and the scientific method, ensuring transparency and building trust.

What have been your biggest accomplishments on the Donan team?

I’d say my most significant accomplishment with Donan thus far has been working with a small team to grow and develop a brand-new component testing lab. We have embarked on an exciting process of conceptualizing, testing, and evolving the tools, techniques, and infrastructure necessary to design a highly functioning lab.

What drew you to this industry?

I was inspired by in-demand work that was of utmost importance hundreds of years ago and will continue to be crucial to advancing our society for hundreds more to come. In a world with so much nuance and uncertainty, I am inspired by the objectivity and absolute truth discovered through this work.

Are there things you see on the horizon in the industry that you’re excited about?

Modern advancements such as infotainment and elaborate event data recorders present cutting-edge opportunities to access more in-depth information. It will be essential to collect this amplitude of information while keeping in alignment with ethical and legal boundaries.
